BANG GOES THE THEORY - Andy again working as assistant stunt co-ordinator, early on in the summer of 2010, the Bolddog Lings FMX Team got a call from the popular TV series, Bang Goes the Theory. The question was, could we help them develop a square wheel motorcycle and make it jump?

The bike that had been chosen was a Honda C90, which was supplied by Lings for all the tests. Firstly, the Bolddog Lings Team tested the flight of the bike with the normal round wheels into the foam pit. Next, the Bang Goes the Theory Team applied the maths to reality, so later in the summer, the BBC came to the Bolddog FMX compound to film the square wheel theory applied into practice...

Bang Goes The Theory

Putting the theory into practice was more difficult than it looked on paper. The main problem being that the wheels easily got out of sync, which meant the square wheels went smashing through the specially made track. The problem was eventually solved by sanding down the grooves of the track so that the wheels could slip in exactly into the grooves. Even the positioning of the rider on the bike was an important factor to keep the wheels in sync.

Jem was the presenter of the TV programme, and the person that would have to do the jump for the cameras. Following a few training sessions with the Bolddog Team, Jem quickly got to grips with jumping the C90 into the pit, and after ironing out the wheel sync problems, the square wheel jump was a success!
